It is a week of the feast for gamers, as we have all been blessed by the greatness of PlayStation’s State of Play. Although God of War Ragnarök has dominated the headlines, we would like to appreciate what many have considered the next best thing that came out of the State of Play, Rise of the Ronin.
Rise of the Ronin is an upcoming game by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja. The same team that brought us the Nioh series is also working on Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, set to release next year. The game received a reveal trailer in the SoP, and I think it’s best if you check it out yourself.
About the Game
Rise of the Ronin is an action RPG that focuses on the comprehensive combat mechanics in the open world. The game is set in the Edo Period of Japan, commonly known as “Bakumatsu”. It features one of the darkest times of Japan as it struggled with the many oppressive rulers and plagues of diseases that struck the country. Not to mention, the civil war between different factions is leaving things even more devastated.
The team started working on this project almost seven years ago, and since then, a lot of work has been put into it. The developers’ hard work and spirit shine brightly through the trailer. Not only did it catch the attention of many gamers, but according to a reporter, it seems like the game also carries some heavy hopes from the studio.
Koei Tecmo confirmed "Rise of the Ronin" is a title it hopes to sell more than 5 million copies as one of important strategic pillars of the company's mid-term growth strategy.

We at TopTierList found Takashi Mochizuki‘s statement very interesting as it highlights the future expectations from the game. Takashi is a reporter at Bloomberg, and he confirmed this himself. We knew they had a game in development with such expectations, but since Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is another game set to release next year, people thought that was the game in question.
However, it turns out that we were wrong, and Rise of the Ronin is the game considered a more significant title than Wo Long. It will still be a tough job for the game, as the Nioh series itself has 6m+ units sold. But that’s a whole series, so Rise of the Ronin would need top-notch marketing, but most importantly, fantastic gameplay and story.
Can It Deliver Those Expectations?
Fortunately, the game has received nothing but praise after its reveal, and many people hope it does as per the expectations. It may not be an open world like Elden Ring, but it’s Koei Tecmo’s first big step towards this side, and they are already doing very impressively.
If the game does that well, we might see more titles coming from Team Ninja in the future, or maybe even bigger steps towards a different genre. All we know is that we are looking forward to it. But what about you? What are your thoughts on the game? Do you think it will do as good as their expectations? Let us know your thoughts, and we will discuss them with you below!
