Job Listings Reveal WoW Mobile Game Still in Development

World of Warcraft is an MMORPG game released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. The game is set in the fantasy universe of Warcraft, which has inspired and revolutionized the fantasy genre. It is one of the most popular franchises and has some of the most dedicated fan bases.

The game takes place in Azeroth, around four years after the events of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. It was announced three years before its release on the 10th anniversary of the franchise. In addition, eight major expansions of the game have come out since then, The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), Warlords of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle for Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020), with a ninth, Dragonflight, currently in development.

About World of Warcraft Mobile Game

Although there hasn’t been a content drought in the game, fans have always been eager for a sequel/spin-off. However, their only hope with the spin-off game for mobile was crushed a while ago when a notable gaming reporter talked about Blizzard and NetEase cancelling the project due to some financial reasons.

Although the specifics are not as clear, it has been confirmed that the game was cancelled for a while, and the three years of development put into it have been scrapped.

But that changes now as our sharp eyes at TopTierList found some job listings that reveal that there is an unannounced Warcraft Mobile Project. If that is true, which seems like the case now, Blizzard has either continued its development or completely revamped the project.

Major Points

  • Blizzard has posted some job listings that reveal an Unannounced Warcraft Mobile Project.
  • The game is now either continuing its development or is a separate project from the previous one, which was reported to have been scrapped.
  • The details are still unclear, but we can confidently say that the many job listings reveal a change in much of the staff. So, they likely let go of the previous people working on the game.

Blizzard’s Job Listing for Mobile Game

Blizzard posted some job listings almost a week ago for positions like Senior/ Principal Character Concept Artist and Senior/ Principal Pipeline Technical ArtistAside from the work’s description and nature, the biggest giveaway was in the title itself.

Putting that aside, we can confirm the dates of these job lists from Blizzard Entertainment’s LinkedIn, where these two, along with two others, were listed almost a week ago.

Mid-Senior Environment Concept Artist.

So, we can safely say they have either the same game or a new project in development. In both cases, we cannot be sure if NetEase is involved with the project. The report that gave the news of the game’s doom mentioned there had been financial disputes between the two companies.

However, those claims were denied by an Activision Blizzard spokesperson, who assured that there had been no such disputes, and both companies “continue to have an extremely successful relationship.

Due to the confusion surrounding the situation, and lack of inside knowledge, we cannot make confident speculations. But there is no doubt that the game is in development, and since that is the case, some official announcement will come eventually.

The Job description also confirms that the team is working on the game in Blizzard’s Irvine Headquarters in California. If you are curious about the listings, the job description for one of the more significant positions, Senior/ Principal Character Concept Artist, states:

Blizzard is looking for a highly motivated and talented Character Concept Artist to join a new Warcraft mobile project. In this role, you will bring all forms of characters and creatures to life and push our project’s visual fidelity

Importantly, this will include giving direction on art assets produced by external partners, thus previous experience working with external artists is highly desired. You should have an ability to provide clear paint-over and verbal feedback to others, both internally and externally.” It further states, “Sound fun? If you’re up to the challenge of helping realize the next epic Warcraft title, we want to hear from you

Ending Remarks

It is surprising to see Blizzard pick up the mantle again, especially after the controversy and criticism received after the launch of Diablo Immortal. The company has developed a bad reputation in mobile gaming, but that doesn’t stop them from continuing their Warcraft mobile title.

We can’t complain since Warcraft is one of the most enjoyable games, and any new content, especially in the form of a mobile game, is welcome.
