Pokemon Game Tier List: All Games Ranked [2023]

In this article, I am going to share our Pokemon Game Tier List with you guys, which is a spicy topic among the fandom. But since I have played all the Pokemon mainline game series very recently, and they are very fresh in my mind, 

I have divided the games of Pokemon into five tiers, based on their playing experience, gameplay, the overall impact of the story, and how well the game aged in regards to some of the older titles. So let’s start listing down games and see which games are the best and slightly flawed in the Pokemon media franchise.

S Tier

This tier of the Best Pokemon Game Tier List consists of great Pokemon games with enhanced versions in terms of mechanics and are also favorites among all fandom fans. Similarly, Pokemon games in this tier significantly impact the story of the serious and have amazing Pokemon with good battle sequences.

Pokemon: Legends Arceus

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a Generation Eight game set long before the events of Diamond and Pearl in the Hisui region of Sinnoh. On January 28, 2022, the game was released globally. Instead of having predefined pathways, the game includes an almost utterly open-world terrain, similar to the Wild Area in Pokemon Sword and Shield. The player can pick from three separate Starter Pokemon, each coming from a previous installment of the mainline Pokemon games.

In essence, the story takes place in the Hisui region, eventually known as Sinnoh. The game’s events took place several centuries ago when the world was mostly made up of unspoiled nature. There were very few settlements, and people’s relationships with Pokemon were still developing.

Undoubtedly, Pokemon: Legends Arceus is one the best Pokemon game ever made, in my opinion. I have enjoyed everything about it. It is an excellent departure from the monotony that we have had in every Pokemon game up until this point. It has an exceptional adaptation of other RPG elements and open-world content. So I will place it at the top of the S-Tier.

Pokemon Emerald

Pokemon Emerald is the sixth video game in the Pokemon franchise. The cover portrays the legendary Pokemon Rayquaza. The game is an improved recreation of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, added in the third generation of the Pokemon series. The player takes control of a Pokemon trainer.

Their objective is to go across the Hoenn area and conquer a sequence of eight Pokemon gyms to collect eight Gym Badges, then face the Elite Four, defeat the Pokemon League Champion, and win. The game includes third-generation Pokemon and several second-generation Pokemon that were previously only available in the Pokemon Colosseum.

I honestly think it might be one of the better Pokemon games. The battle frontier was a fantastic addition to the game, the change in the main story involving both teams was tremendous. So for me, Pokemon Emerald will join others in the S-Tier.

Pokemon Black and White Version 2

In Japan, Pokemon Black and White Version 2 is a pair of sequels to Pokemon Black and White, released on June 23, 2012. The game offers an entirely different scenario and features than the previous games. The games occur two years after the events of Pokemon Black and White, and the Unova area has drastically transformed, with new locations and Pokemon from prior generations.

Hugh, the player’s rival, greets us at Aspertia City, a city southwest of Unova. Bianca gives us a starter Pokemon, either Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott. As we go around Unova, we will face new and old Gym Leaders and meet the new Team Plasma as well as the old Team Plasma.

Similarly, locations have changed dramatically in the two years between Pokemon Black and White. Challenger’s Cave, for example, is no longer accessible. The Pokemon World Tournament is a new feature that allows trainers to compete in a single or double fight against other trainers. Pokéstar Studios will enable players to feature in a variety of genre movies.

Pokemon Black and White did many amazing things with the Pokemon tournament and everything else I mentioned. When I think about them, up to that point, they were one of the best games that Pokemon ever made. I think they deserve their place at the S-tier of the Every Pokemon Game Tier List.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

The central Generation Six games, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, are upgraded remakes of Ruby and Sapphire’s third-generation games. On May 7, 2014, the new games were revealed in a worldwide announcement on the official Pokemon websites, and they were released in Japan on November 21, 2014. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire recreation of the classic Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games that infuses a new beginning into several concepts. A Mega Evolved form exists for several Pokemon. Sceptile, Swampert, and Blaziken, the region’s starters, are the most renowned.

Consequently, the remakes of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are the first to include 3D gameplay. The player can now move in all eight directions. Secret bases come back as Super Secret Bases in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. There were numerous changes from emerald as well in these games. Like most other remakes, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are fantastic offerings to the gaming series. They did a lot to the game, but it was pretty easy, so overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

Pokemon Platinum

After Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Pokemon Platinum is the third game in Generation Four. Giratina, the version mascot, appears in its Origin Form on the cover. Nintendo officially revealed the game on May 15, 2008. At the start of the game. on Route 201, the player encounters Professor Rowan and gets their Starter Pokemon. Team Galactic’s goals for world dominance have been altered, as have the design of their HQs, like their stronghold in Eterna. Furthermore, they are eviler and openly admit their objective. All of Sinnoh’s Gym Leaders and the player’s tag battle partners from throughout the game can now be challenged to rematches.

Notably, Pokemon Platinum is an enhanced version of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Pokemon Platinum made a lot of improvements. They focused on Giratina and added the distortion world. In addition, a new form to Giratina, the first Legendary Pokemon with a completely different form, would be the blueprint moving forward to many other games and Pokemons.  For those reasons, Pokemon Platinum is easily the S-tier.

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are Generation Four remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver, the original Generation II games. On September 12, 2009, Nintendo launched the Japanese versions of Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver. These remakes feature the series’ significant developments since Generation Two, similar to how FireRed and LeafGreen evolved from Red and Blue. Poke Walker, a portable pedometer that looks like a Poke Ball, is featured in these games.

Surprisingly, in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Lyra’s new female character was introduced to replace Kris, and Gold was renamed, Ethan. All gyms have been more difficult than in the original Generation Two games. Routes 47 and 48 have been included additionally to these games as well. Overall, we can all agree that Pokemon HeartGold and Soulsilver were a masterpiece in Pokemon games. All things considered, these games are easily the S-tier.

A Tier

A-tier is an above-average tier where I placed the Pokemon video games, which are the best but lack some qualities and impact of the story compared to the above games in the list. Some of the games in this list could be an S-tier for many fans as it is subjective. This tier consists of five games that I think are good but not worthy enough to be put into the S-tier.

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire

The first two games in the Generation Three series are Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Compared to earlier editions, this series of games takes place in the Hoenn region and contains new Pokemon. The enhancements and changes between Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire compared to prior games were numerous. A total of 135 new Pokemon were added, and a further double fight system.

These games are excellent, and I know some of the OG Pokemon fans will take issue with this, but I think that the Generation Three games are the best only up to that point. They had an incredibly compelling story and added many new features, such as a Pokemon contest and running shoes. There was a lot of water in the game, which I know many fans did not like, but it was something new, and the post-game was pretty good.

Despite this, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire are among the Pokemon games that I have the least time in, but I still enjoyed Ruby overall. Having your dad as one of the Gym Leaders was a nice change which makes these games an excellent Pokemon game. In my opinion, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire deserve to be placed at the A-tier of the Pokemon Game Tier List 2023 alongside Generation Two games.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

The Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen games are remakes of the original Pokemon Red and Blue games. These games, like the original, are set in the Kanto area and feature the Sevii Islands, which were absent from the original. These games are Generation Three games, even though they are remakes of Generation One games. They are with improved visuals and numerous additional features. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are the optimal versions to play Generation One.

These are excellent games, and I think they have significant improvements compared to the original Generation One game. These games also feature modern mechanics like running shoes and added new areas like the Sevii Islands. I think they might be the most well-rounded Pokemon games at that time. For those reasons, I placed Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen at the A-tier.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The Generation Seven games Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl is improved remakes of the fourth-generation games Diamond and Pearl. The new games were unveiled on February 26, 2021, in a global Pokemon Presents event. Sprites have been replaced by 3D models, similar to those seen in Pokemon X and Y from Generation Six.

In effect, the functionality of HMs has been relocated to the Pokétch, allowing players to summon Pokemon to help them overcome challenges. The first main series games were not created directly by Game Freak; however, they were still in charge of the project, and Junichi Masuda directed the games. These games made many changes to modernize the game, like adding a clothes option and different things similar to it. So I will put them at the A-tier.

Pokemon Black and White

 

The first two Generation Five games for the Nintendo DS are Pokemon Black and White. Like the previous main games, these games offer additional features to Pokemon while maintaining comparable features of earlier games. Each Black and White game case is packaged in a box with artwork depicting Zekrom or Reshiram with their tails.

More than in any previous generation, there are 156 new Pokemon in these games. They take the 3D features found in Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver and push them to new heights by integrating entirely 3D bridges and 3D cities.

These games were a good starting point for new players and a great entry point for fans wanting to get back into the series. I remember feeling a bit weird when I first played these games. It was fun and different, but I’m not too fond of early-game Pokemon, which is probably my only problem. I may not have enjoyed it quite as much as Generation Four.

I found the Pokemon a bit strange at first, but overall, I think these are solid Pokemon games. They get a lot better as you progress and have some of the best storylines in the entire franchise. Since I feel pretty generous, I will place Pokemon Black and White at the A-tier of the Best Pokemon Game Tier List.

Pokemon Crystal

Pokemon Crystal is a sequel to Pokemon Gold and Silver and the sixth main series game. It is also the third Generation Two game. Crystal is notable for being the first main series game to incorporate Pokemon animations and a unique plot starring Suicune. The first female playable character in a Pokemon game, Kris, was also included. Crystal was the only Game Boy Color game in the main series.

The Pokemon Pikachu line of pedometers uses the mystery gift function to give the player items depending on steps performed and points gained, including infrared connectivity with Crystal.

Furthermore, the first game with semi-moving Pokemon sprites was Pokemon Crystal. This was later seen in the Generation Three and Generation Four games. Pokemon Crystal is the first Pokemon game to provide players the option of playing as a male or female character. There are some nice changes in Pokemon Crystal over Gold and Silver.

B Tier

The B-tier is an average tier where I placed those games with a decent storyline and some improvements in the mechanics. It includes three games from the Pokemon universe, mainly the new takes on series that were not well accepted by the fans of the fandom.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl

The Generation Four Pokemon games include Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. These games are the first main series of Pokemon games on the Nintendo DS, and they take place in the Sinnoh region. The game features 107 new Pokemon and follows the exploits of a new Pokemon Trainer as he attempts to become the Pokemon League Champion by gathering and training various Pokemon species. Gym Leaders act as bosses, rewarding competent Trainers with badges and advancing the storyline of the Pokemon League.

Playing Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the first time was exceptional for me. I think Pokemon Pearl and Diamond are great at their post-game content and are heavily underrated. You have three entire towns and an entire island that you go to after you beat the Elite Four. They added a bunch of Legendary Pokemons, but I was not a fan of all the mythical ones that were very hard to catch. I kind of feels like Generation Three and Generation Four are the best Generations, and these games are excellent across the board.

Objectively Pokemon Diamond might not be one of the best Pokemon games mainly because the game’s pacing is slow. I might be biased, but I will put Pokemon Diamond and Pearl at the top of the A-tier of the Every Pokemon game tier list.

Pokemon Gold and Silver

Pokemon Gold and Silver is a second-generation Pokemon video game. The game includes all-new content from the previous three installments. Both of these games take place in the Johto and Kanto regions.

A year after their initial release, another game, Pokemon Crystal, was launched with a few minor changes and additions. These games introduced Johto. Three years after the Pokemon Red and Blue events, a new region was set. In the games, a hundred new Pokemon were introduced. A time system was implemented, which allowed particular Pokemon to arrive at specific times and events on specific days.

In addition to that, Pokemon may now hold items. PokeGear is a new device that will enable you to use a clock, cell phone, and radio. Specialized Poke Balls were developed, making it simpler to catch specific Pokemon. Dark-type and Steel-type Pokemon were introduced as new types of Pokemon. The combat screen now displays the player’s Pokemon’s level of experience and whether or not a wild Pokemon has been caught.

Furthermore, the first virus discovered was “Pokerus,” which infects a Pokemon and doubles its experience. Shiny Pokemon made their first appearance in these games. Backward compatibility was included, enabling trades across games. The game’s featured antagonists are Team Rocket once again. With their leader Giovanni missing, Team Rocket resumes their mission of kidnapping Pokemon worldwide, beginning in Johto. They will encounter the player multiple times during the game as they devise various schemes and strategies.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

The first two games of Generation Eight are Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. They take place in Galar, a region inspired by the United Kingdom. Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble are the region’s starter Pokemon. Players can explore the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra using purchased expansion passes for these games. On November 6, 2020, physical editions with expansion passes were released.

The game has been upgraded to a full 3D model, which means the character now has completely realistic characterization and shadow effects. To this day, this is the finest graphic effect Pokemon has ever used in its games. These games introduce two new mechanics: Dynamax and Gigantamax.

Overworld exploration from  Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! Returns in these games. Random interactions with Pokemon can also be discovered in the grass. Overworld Pokemon behave differently than they did in the previous games. These games can be playable with the Poké Ball Plus gadget, but it will not operate as a controller as in Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! Team Yell is the Galar criminal organization.

C Tier

The C-tier is a below-average tier where I placed most of those Pokemon games that are weak in storytelling and were not up to the hype. This tier consists of four games that are very identical to each other. This tier includes three remakes version, and one introduced a new generation of Pokemon.

Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! Let’s Go, Eevee!

Both Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! are Generation Seven games set in Kanto. They are remakes of the Generation One game Pokemon Yellow, the second of two remakes set in Kanto after the Generation Three games Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. They’re also the Nintendo Switch’s first main series of Pokemon games. The player can change their character’s look and that of Pikachu or Eevee. Pikachu, Eevee, and the player character can all change their attire to match.

Everybody was excited when Nintendo Switch came out because it seemed perfect handheld console and a perfect way to put a Pokemon game on it for the first time. They ended up giving us Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! Let’s Go, Eevee, which may be the most controversial game on this list. These games were the remakes of the original games, so we are getting another Generation One remake, but now the games are pretty different.

These games were the simplified version of previous games that seemed to be made for kids or newer players. It was much more similar to the Pokemon Go mobile game than previous handheld games. Many fans were worried that this would be the direction moving forward, but it has not, fortunately.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon are two Generation Seven games and a third version of the original Sun and Moon games. These new games include new versions of previously known Pokemon and new Pokémon, moves, and Z-Moves. Surfing on a Mantine allows the player character to get to other islands while doing stunts and avoiding hazards. The player character can travel via Ultra Wormholes with the assistance of Solgaleo/Lunala to different locations of Ultra Space.

These games are similar to Pokemon Black and White Version 2, where they were not an enhanced version of the original games but more of a sequel, Even though they have no significant change in gameplay. They are essentially Sun and Moon, but with added stuff like the Rainbow Rocket, so you cannot at least put these games lower than them. So for these reasons, I will place Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon at the C-Tier of the Pokemon Game Tier List.

Pokemon X and Y

When Pokemon X and Y came out, it was great that they had customizable trainers that we did not have before. The switch from Sprites to 3D models was adequate. I do somewhat miss the Sprites because they had quite some charm to them, and they were different in each generation, whereas we have the same-looking models in each game now. The difficulty of the games did feel like a step-down. Indeed, it felt a bit easier. They did not add as many Pokemons as prior generations, but they had mega evolutions.

The companions you have in Pokemon X and Y, the rivals, are incredibly annoying to most of them. There are so many things in these games that do not make any sense regarding the story and power level. These games had a lot of potential for a sequel after fixing some of those issues, but they never made Pokemon Z afterward because of how poorly these games did at the time.

Moving on from Generation Six, Pokemon X, and Y. Even though these are probably the two Pokemon games that I had the most hours in because I did a lot of breeding. It was my introduction to the competitive scene. I admit that the post-game of these games was relatively lacking, but still, an average experience with this game deserves its place in the C-tier.

Pokemon Yellow

Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition, or simply Pokemon Yellow, is the third worldwide edition in the Pokemon franchise and the fourth in Japan. Pokémon Yellow is notable for being the first game in the series to enable Pokemon to walk alongside the player character, as well as the fact that the starting Pokemon is an Electric-type Pokemon instead of a Grass-type, Fire-type, or Water-type.

I would put Pokemon Yellow in the above tier of Pokemon Red and Blue. It is slightly better because you get a little bit of role-playing nostalgia of playing with Pikachu and scarcely a challenge. They made some changes to teams and stuff. Most of the game is the same, but some of the enhancements they made to the game, I think, were pretty good. But overall, the game is not any better than the newer Pokemon games. Above all, Pokemon Yellow is better for the time that it offers.

Pokemon Yellow had better-looking sprites and more excellent colors. These games were Game Boy games, but on Game Boy Color, they had surprisingly better colors. All things considered, I do not think it was quite a step up to the other three versions. It’s still a solid game, so overall, I would put it in the C-Tier.

D Tier

The games in this D-tier are usually old first-generation games. These games planted the roots for the upcoming Pokemon games. The games here had many bugs that annoyed many fandom fans.

Pokemon Blue

The Pokemon Blue Version is a revamped version of the Pokemon Red and Green games. It’s also the game used to translate Generation I games worldwide. Pokemon Blue was the third edition of the original Kanto games in Japan. Yellow Edition was a new game added to the set for changed gameplay and to take advantage of the Game Boy Color’s full potential. Because the two feature identical Pokemon battle sprites and photographs, the Blue Version was chosen as the Red Version’s overseas release equivalent.

Pokemon Red and Blue are the ones that started it all, so putting them in any place below in the D-tier of the Best Pokemon Game Tier List would be a kind of injustice. You can argue that they have not aged well and that only the concept was better than the execution they did at the time, but I do believe that Generation One is promising gen, and you could not have the rest of them without these games. They are like the roots of all the games present in the Pokemon media franchise.

Pokemon Red and Green

The initial Pokemon games, Red and Green, were launched in Japan. Green was only published in Japan alongside Red, and when the games were translated for international distribution, Green was replaced by Pokemon Blue. Pokemon Red may have been very glitchy and had the most miniature deck of any Pokemon game, but it is still a classic disregarding all of that.

This game includes a great soundtrack, although it is only limited to the Gameboy sounds. It has a fun story to follow, and at that time, it was a great game. They did the best of what they could do with the hardware. The nostalgic factor also plays a vital role in these games.

The part of the fun in playing Generation One games is to play how the game has initially been broken in some ways, and playing around is quite a lot of fun. With that said, some games have something like that, which makes them a bit more entertaining and adds something a little extra, and for that reason, I think we got to put Pokemon Red and Green in the D-Tier.

Pokemon Sun and Moon

Pokemon Sun and Moon are the first games in the Generation Seven series. The journey begins in the Alola area, full of beaches, tropical plants, and water. Many new elements have been introduced to the game, including Z-Moves, Z-Crystals, and Alolan variants of earlier generations’ Pokemon. The Rite of the Island Challenge, Hyper Training, Poké Ride. PokéPelago, Festival Plaza, Battle Royale, and the Poké Finder have all been introduced. Trial Captains will lead the player character through trials and fights with the Kahuna Leaders. Team Skull is the Alola criminal organization.

Alolan forms are a brand-new series entry, and these are Pokemon from past generations that have undergone various transformations due to Alola’s environment. The kind, design, height, and weight of the Pokemon all are changed.

Pokemon Sun and Moon have not aged well as they could have been. It is not a Pokemon game I see myself going back to nowadays, and many people do consider it one of the weaker Pokemon games for many reasons. The change from Gym to Trials was exciting, something different, but I do much prefer the Gyms, and I do think this is a game that is much better when you first play through it, and then going back to it might not be as good but I still had fun with it.

Verdict

I did a little bit of reordering, and I’m sure we would all agree that is the correct order for the Pokemon games, and those of you who do not, you can tell me angrily down in the comments. Well, it is time for this list to end. One of my abilities is to waste a significant amount of time analyzing games on how certain great games are.

Obviously, I took this job exceptionally seriously, with every tier. Let me know what you guys thought in the comments down below.
