S Tier
First up in our tier list is, of course, the S rank. It will cater to the best spells according to the abovementioned criteria. They are almost crucial to use in at least one stage of the game. Furthermore, it is probably a good idea to use them whenever the cooldown is low because of how quickly they can change the tide of the battle.
Ancient Magic
Ancient Magic is the most crucial spell in the game. The whole flow of Hogwarts Legacy practically revolves around this one spell, so obviously, it will be one of the best spells to use. In addition to being one of the highest damage spells, it also makes the caster invulnerable when casting. It would be a good idea to boost Ancient Magic with talents as much as you can to maximize efficiency.

Ancient Magic Throw
Next up in the Ancient Magic line is Ancient Magic Throw. While Ancient Magic deals a high amount of damage, Ancient Magic Throw can utilize surrounding objects and effectively break shields. It has great synergy with spells like Expelliarmus to maximize the damage you can do afterward. Lastly, the spell deals serious damage on its own, so it is definitely a good idea to almost always have it equipped.
Type | Essential |
Talent upgrade | Catches and throws disarmed enemy weapons |

5 |
Petrificus Totalus
Pterificus Totalus is an essential spell and one of the more familiar ones we will look at in the article. It can bind enemies permanently; however, if the enemy is a little too strong for you, it will only deal damage and quickly break free from the effect. It is more commonly used in stealth builds but can also be used as an alternative to using any of the unforgivable curses.
Type | Essential |
Talent upgrade | Emanates an area of effect that can impact nearby enemies |
Talent upgrade level
|
22 |
Protego
Protego is one of the essential spells in Hogwarts Legacy. It is a protection spell that can shield you from a lot of different types of damage. A fun thing about the spell is that if you time it just right, you can initiate a perfect Protego. A perfect Protego will block all incoming damage and damage the attacker or reflect the projectiles back to the caster.
Type | Essential |
Talent upgrade | Successful Protego blocks will contribute to the Ancient Magic Meter and Perfect Protego blocks will contribute even more. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5, 16, and 22 |
Imperio
The first Unforgivable Curse we will look at is the Imperio Curse. It does exactly what it does in the books, giving you control over the target. It can temporarily cause the target to become your ally and fight for you. While influenced by the curse, they will also take reduced damage from all sources. It is one of the most devastating spells in the Dark Arts tree because it also curses the target, allowing them to take increased damage when they are no longer fighting for you.
Type | Unforgivable Curse |
Talent upgrade | An enemy under your control with Imperio curses other targets with each successful strike. |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
Transformation
The last S-rank spell we will look at is the Transformation spell. It is a control spell that can allow you to transform enemies or objects into something else. Using the spell can allow you to focus on fewer enemies by taking some of them out of the fight for a very long time. While it is not a combat spell, it has great uses in most fights and puzzles.
Type | Control |
Talent upgrade | Enemies struck with the Transformation spell transform into explosive objects. |
Talent upgrade level
|
22 |
A Tier
The A rank of our Hogwarts Legacy Spells Tier List will focus more on the combat spells that aren’t necessarily the most crucial but are still extremely powerful. They have certain properties like a high cooldown that limits their usefulness. All in all, they are powerful spells that are good in many scenarios.
Avada Kedavra
What better way to start the A tier than with the most deadly unforgivable curse, the death curse? Avada Kedavra is a spell that needs no introduction if you have seen the movies or read the books. It instantly kills any enemy you target the spell at. The trick lies in obtaining it because it is one of the darkest spells you can get in the game. However, this spell is for you if you want to clear enemy rooms with one burst.
Type | Unforgivable Curse |
Talent upgrade | Killing an enemy with Avada Kedavra kills all cursed enemies. |
Talent upgrade level
|
22 |
Bombarda
Bombarda is a regular damage spell that deals much impact damage. It is also accompanied by an explosion that can potentially destroy surrounding objects and damage nearby enemies. It is a very serious AoE damage that is quite useful in quickly clearing out hordes of enemies. Furthermore, it can spread enemies apart for a better chance of fighting them.
Type | Damage |
Talent upgrade | Bombarda causes an explosive blast with a massive area of effect. |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
Diffindo
Diffindo is another damage spell that excels in slashing enemies and dealing much damage. It does have a pretty high cooldown, but the damage output is worth it. Pairing it with control spells is quite a powerful combo because you ideally want your enemies to be in a line when you use the spell. It is almost always good to have it equipped if you know you will be fighting against big hordes.
Type | Damage |
Talent upgrade | Diffindo casts slices through impacted enemies to strike additional targets. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Levioso
Much like Wingardium Leviosa, Levioso is a control spell useful for levitating objects and enemies. The spell is extremely good at controlling the enemies and allowing you to focus on the more important enemies. Additionally, Levisos is useful for setting up enemies to be slashed by spells like Diffindo. Grabbing the Levioso talent is quite useful because it can keep several enemies from attacking you for a considerable amount of time.
Type | Control |
Talent upgrade | Enemies near a target levitated by Levioso are also levitated. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Stupefy
Back to the essential spell, the next one on our list is Stupefy. It is one of the most common spells in the Wizarding world and is a basic stun spell. Stupefy has no damage of its own, but the enemies affected by it take increased damage from all sources and break any shields they may have. A good application of Stupefy is often right after Protego as a counterattack to stun opponents.
Type | Essential |
Talent upgrade | Stupefy has the same effect as a curse on enemies. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5, 16, and 22 |
Disillusionment
Disillusionment is one of the strongest stealth spells in Hogwarts Legacy. It allows the caster to blend into their surroundings, which makes it near impossible for enemies to perceive you. It is a very strong spell for sneaking around enemies and using spells like Petrificus Totalus. Disillusionment also has great out-of-combat utility, primarily for avoiding it in pursuit of getting better gear. All in all, if you are looking to get past areas that may seem a little too much, Disillusionment is the perfect spell for you.
Type | Utility |
Talent upgrade | Can sprint during Disillusionment |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Expelliarmus
Much like Avada Kedavra, Expelliarmus is one of the most popular spells in the Potterverse. It is a damage spell that can easily disarm opponents and allow you to fight with ease. This spell not disarms but also deals quite a bit of damage to enemies regardless of whether they wield a weapon or not. A nice thing about the spell is that once the enemies are disarmed, you can use their own weapon to damage them by literally just throwing it at them.
Type | Damage |
Talent upgrade | Cursed enemies with damage from it will take increased damage. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Revelio
The last spell in the A tier of our tier list is Revelio. It is an essential spell that’s useful in and out of combat. It can be used to reveal hidden loot, enemies as well as puzzles in the world, making it easier for you to prepare for the battles up ahead. Lastly, it would be wise to use the spell whenever you can because, in my experience, there is a lot of Hidden loot almost everywhere the game forces you to explore.
Type | Essential |
Talent upgrade | Increases the range of Revelio |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
B Tier
The B tier will have spells that are somewhat average when it comes to performance. It isn’t a bad idea to use them in combat, but they are far from powerful. A cool thing about these spells is that a lot of them are effect spells that are quite fun to play around with. They are listed as follows.
Confringo
The first spell in the B tank is Confringo. It is a pretty average damage spell that can target enemies from a pretty long range. While it isn’t the most powerful damage spell, it is available quite early on, which makes it quite important to use quite often too. Confringo can be used in a number of ways, like setting up for follow-up damage or destroying enemy shields from a pretty long distance.
Type | Damage |
Talent upgrade | Confringo impacts produce fiery bolts that seek enemy targets. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Crucio
The final unforgivable curse, Crucio. Crucio is one of the most morbid spells in the entire game because it relies on dealing damage to enemies by inflicting pain for a considerable amount of time. Unlike the other unforgivable curses, it has no immediate effect and is therefore not worth the trouble for an unforgivable curse. Given that, it does curse the victim, allowing them to take increased damage from all sources. It can also be spread to multiple enemies when paired with other Curses.
Type | Unforgivable Curse |
Talent upgrade | Striking an enemy cursed by Crucio releases a projectile that curses a nearby enemy. |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
Glacius
As the name would suggest, Glacius is a control spell that can freeze the target in its path. It is a fairly useful spell that can slow down enemies and allow them to take increased damage. However, using Levioso instead of this spell is a much better idea because of its significantly lower cooldown time. With some talents, it can get quite annoying to deal with but overall, not worth the effort in the long run.
Type | Control |
Talent upgrade | Striking an enemy frozen by Glacius blasts damaging shards outward from the target. |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
Accio
Accio is a force spell that can be used to summon objects or entities to a closer range. It is commonly used to disrupt enemies by casting spells or using weapons. Furthermore, the spell also automatically applies the Wingardium Leviosa effect to the object without needing to cast it. Accio is particularly deadly when used with Incendio, which can be quite a deadly combo early in the game.
Type | Force |
Talent upgrade | Enemies near a target summoned by Accio are also pulled to you. |
Talent upgrade level
|

Incendio
Indendio is a damage spell that, again, is quite obvious from the name, causes fire damage. A massive drawback of the spell is that it requires the caster to be extremely close to the target, which is why it has good synergy with Accio. It is quite a strong damage spell but comes with a risk against more powerful enemies that can easily tank the damage being dealt to them.
Type | Damage |
Talent upgrade | Casting Incendio unleashes a ring of flame around you |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Depulso
Depulso is almost the opposite of Accio. It repels any enemies away with a lot of force, allowing you to keep them at a considerable range. A pretty fun use of the spell is to use environmental factors like cliffs or fire to deal damage to enemies. It is also an AoE spell that can target many enemies at once.
Type | Force |
Talent upgrade | Casting Depulso releases an additional blast directly around you. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
C Tier
Now comes the C tier of our Hogwarts Legacy Spells Tier List. Here we will cover some of the less-than-average spells that rarely ever have a practical use in combat. They are mostly control spells that are rarely ever used if used at all. Using them for fun is a viable option, but if you’re looking to use them in combat, you may not have a fun time. They are listed as follows.
Basic Cast
Basic Cast is an essential spell with practically no cooldown and is probably the most used spell in the game. However, it is abysmal when it comes to damage but can be used to create effective combos or to generate some magic orbs to recharge some of the ancient spell meters. You will be forced to use your auto-attack ability if you have no other spells available.
Type | Essential |
Talent upgrade | Basic Cast impacts reduce spell cooldowns. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 and 16 |
Flipendo
Flipendo is one of the shortest cooldown spells we will look at. It can flip objects and enemies effectively, but other than that, it has no real use. With some talent upgrades, it can be used quite well by spreading Dark Arts spells and curses to other enemies. Additionally, it is quite a nice spell when dealing with puzzles or exploiting the weaknesses of your enemies.
Type | Force |
Talent upgrade | Cursed enemies take increased damage. |
Talent upgrade level
|
5 |
Arresto Momentum
Arresto Momentum is another extremely obvious spell that can slow down objects as well as enemies and give you some time to plan your follow-up attacks. It is one of the weakest control spells because of its somewhat impractical uses. However, it may be used in puzzles here and there, but using it in combat is not really a good idea unless you’re building the Dark Arts Talents.
Type | Control |
Talent upgrade | Cursed enemies strike with it takes increased damage. |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
Descendo
Descendo is a force spell that deals no damage whatsoever. Limited as it is, it is useful for only one thing, slamming objects and enemies into the ground. The damage they will take is only from impact damage, which will be higher for enemies who are airborne. Therefore, it may be a fun tactic to play around with the levitation spells paired with Desendo for weak but fun types of damage.
Type | Force |
Talent upgrade | A Descendo slam creates a damaging shockwave around your target. |
Talent upgrade level
|
16 |
D Tier
In the D tier, we will look at some of the spells that are particularly good when exploring. They have absolutely no use in combat but are used a lot when moving around. The only difference between this tier and the one below is the usefulness of the spells listed within them.
Lumos
Lumos is one of the most useful spells in the game, only not in combat. The spell will temporarily provide you with light, which, as light does, will allow you to explore darker areas effectively. It has no use in combat at all but can be good for finding chests and field guides.

Alohomora
Alohomora is the unlocking spell that allows the caster to explore some of the locked areas freely. It does require a lot of magical prowess to use, though, so using it a lot may not end up that well for you. Other than that, it has absolutely no use in combat or any other place in the game.

Evanesco
Evanseco is the last D-tier spell that can be used to Vanish certain items or return moonstones when used in the Room of Requirement. The latter ability of its function is the only reason it is not in the F tier because, at times, refunding moonstones can be quite useful.

F Tier
Finally, the last rank of our tier list is the F rank. The current section focuses entirely on the spells used in the Room of Requirement. These spells have absolutely no use in combat but are necessary for the decorative arts and husbandry tasks. Let’s have a look at them below.
Wingardium Leviosa
The first spell must come as a surprise to most of you but believe it or not, the most famous spell of all is one of the most useless spells. In combat, Levioso is the clear winner of control spells, but if you want to challenge the enunciation of your enemies, this spell is the clear winner. Furthermore, if you hold Accio for long enough, you’ll basically get the same thing.

Reparo
Reparo is useless when it comes to combat. It is only ever used in some quests to progress. Therefore, you should keep it in your spell spots when needed for a quest. Otherwise, it would just waste a spell slot.

Nab-Sack
Nab-sack is a husbandry spell that has no effect in combat. It is only useful for one thing, which is to rescue beasts in the world, making it a strong utility spell.

Beast Petting Brush
The Beast Petting Brush is quite a self-explanatory spell that is also a pretty decent husbandry/utility spell. All in all, useless in combat and efficient for gaining the favors of your favorite beasts.
Beast Feed
It is a simple Utility spell used in husbandry that conjures up food for your beasts. It, too, has absolutely no use in combat and is a waste of a spell slot when not being used.

Conjuring Spell
The Conjuring spell is used in the Room of Requirement to conjure up objects to place in it. It is only useful in the Room itself, which is why it is definitely not a good idea to have it equipped outside of it.

Altering Spell
Finally, the last spell of the current rank is the Altering Spell. It is a transfiguration spell that allows you to change the appearances and characteristics of things in the Room of the Requirement. Other than that, it has no real use anywhere.
