In 2018, some former Riot Games and Electronic Arts developers joined hands to form Vela Games, a studio based in Dublin, Ireland, which was announced to be working on a new skill-based multiplayer online cooperative game, codenamed “Project-V”, that combined elements from both League of Legends and World of Warcraft, for players that prefer both PvP and PvE elements.
In June 2021, the company raised $17.3 million in Series A funding to continue the development of the project, after having expanded its development team with former developers from companies like Blizzard Entertainment, Epic Games, and Moon Studios.
In 2020, Vela Games opened registrations for players to sign up and try its upcoming multiplayer online cooperative game, a genre that the company calls “MOCO”, for short.“It’s still early days for Project-V, but we’re thrilled to offer a sneak peek at a few of our characters, and let a small pool of players test out what we’ve been working on as soon as possible,” said Travis George, the co-founder, and CEO of Vela Games.
Furthermore, the company announced that it would begin officially testing the game in 2021. However, not much has been revealed about the game since then — that is, until now.
Earlier today, we came across a few recent job listings on the Vela Games website that suggest that “Project-V” may be a third-person cross-platform game, that’s also free-to-play. One of the job listings on the website is for the Senior Animator position at the company’s studio based in Dublin, Ireland, the description for which reads, “Vela Games is looking for a highly motivated and talented Senior Animator who will be responsible for creating a diverse variety of animations needed to breathe life into our new world through classic animation principles.” However, the details are in the “Bonus points” that the candidate could have for this job position.
One of the bonuses includes “experience on 3rd person action, RPG, or fighting games,” which suggests that the upcoming game could have a third-person perspective instead of the isometric perspective that most MOBA games, including League of Legends, have. Furthermore, the job listing also mentions “knowledge of Unreal Engine” as another bonus that the candidate could have, which means that the game will be based on Epic Games’ propriety game engine, Unreal Engine.
Another job listing on the website is for the Marketing Producer position at the company’s studio based in Dublin, Ireland, the description for which reads, “Vela Games is Looking for a Talented Marketing Producer to help build our New Multiplayer Game.” Furthermore, the “Bonus points” for this job listing mention “cross-platform game experience,” suggesting that the game might not just be released on PC, but on other platforms as well, unlike both League of Legends and World of Warcraft. In addition to this, the job listing also mentions “free-to-play experience,” which means that the upcoming game could be free-to-play, as is the case with League of Legends and World of Warcraft.
Lastly, another job listing on the website is for the (Senior) Gameplay Engineer position at the company’s studio based in Dublin, Ireland, the description for which is the same as the previous job listing. However, what sets this one apart from the previous ones are the “Bonus points” mentioned in it, which give further details about the project.
One of the bonuses mentioned in the job listing is “expertise in procedural content generation techniques,” which implies that the upcoming game might be procedurally generated, something that we saw in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth expansion for World of Warcraft. Additionally, the job listing also mentions “previous AAA PC or console game development experience,” further affirming that the upcoming game may be cross-platform and not exclusive to PC only.
Unfortunately, these are all the details we have about this upcoming multiplayer online cooperative game from Vela Games at the moment. The company has been very secretive about “Project-V”, as it mentions on its website, “While we’re not ready to talk about specifics, Project-V’s gameplay combines the teamplay and skill of a MOBA with the adventure of an MMO dungeon raid.” So far, the company has had one window of Pre-Alpha Testing and has more planned for later this year, so we will almost certainly be getting more information about the project soon.
